Obtaining a work permit and SSN under DT Parole status (c)(11)
When crossing the border, the border officer provides a Form I-94 with DT (Parole) status. This status may also be stamped on the passport.
It is important to note that the Parole status itself does not automatically entitle you to a work permit and social security number (SSN), except for Ukrainian citizens.
The best option is to submit an online application using Form I-765. However, in this case, a fee of $410 is required.
If you do not wish to pay the fee, you may mail the application following the following instructions.
1. Download and complete Form I-765 from the uscis website. In the "Your Category" section, indicate "c"(11). You may indicate on this form that you need an SSN, and you will receive your social security number in a separate mailing once your application is approved.
2. If you have financial hardship, you may file Form I-912 for an exemption from the state fee.
A fee waiver is available in the following cases:
Form I-912 for state fee waiver is sent along with Form I-765 for work authorization.
The order in which the documents are sent:
From 2022 through 2023, applications in the (c)(11) category took between 2 and 8 months to process. And starting in October 2023, the process is promised to speed up and the processing time will be 30 days.
The work authorization will be valid until your I-94 "Password" status ends, which is less than a year.
The address to send your documents to depends on where you live. More information can be found here.
