If asylum is granted

If an immigration judge grants you asylum, congratulations! You have successfully made significant progress in the process.

The government may have the right to appeal the immigration judge's decision to the BIA. You must file an appeal within 30 days of the decision. It is recommended that you monitor the status of your case for the next 30 days to see if the government has filed an appeal.

If the government appeals, you must continue with the appeal process. The BIA will send you a notice in the mail with more information about the deadline for filing written arguments. In this situation, it is very helpful to contact an attorney to prepare a brief.

If the government does not appeal, the judge's decision becomes final and you and your family members included in the application will be granted asylum.

You can apply for a work permit that will validate your asylum, although you will no longer need it to work.
You can also apply for permanent residence, known as a green card.
You can also apply to reunite with your spouse and children abroad so they can join you in the United States.
You have a limited time to apply for benefits, including cash and medical assistance, and you can find assistance organizations on the government website.
