Driver’s license

To obtain a driver's license, you must meet your state's requirements and have the necessary paperwork to accumulate a certain number of points. In most cases, a driver's license can be obtained from the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) or the DOL (Department of Licensing).

Check your state's official DMV website for requirements.

Washington:
  • To obtain a driver's license/ID card, you must go to the Department of Licensing.
  • Take the theory and practical test at a driving school
  • The vehicle is registered at a motor vehicle office.

California:
  • Obtain an AB60 license at the DMV.

Before visiting the DMV, you must complete the application form on their website by clicking the "Start Application" button. You will be asked to create an account linked to your email. Fill out the form and at the end you will get a number or take a screenshot or write down the number and save it.
When you go to the DMV, you will need to tell the clerk that you have already filled out the license application and provide this number.
The theory test is given on the day of application on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is an option to choose Russian.
The practical test (driving test) is conducted only by appointment through the same website. You can register only after passing the theory test, when you will be assigned a driver's license number (you will receive a printout at the DMV).

Illinois:
  • If you have an I-94, you can get a TVDL as a "legal resident".

A list of required documents can be found here.

If you don't have documentation to prove your status, you must live in Illinois for one year to get a driver's license.
