Call for biometrics

The primary concern is for those people who have filed the Form I-589 online application with USCIS.

The most common mistake is to expect to receive an email notification or case status change. No! There is no change in case status when you call for biometrics!

Rule #1 - check your personal office regularly (once a week) and do not expect notifications.

If you have received a notification - We have taken an action on your case. Then you should definitely check the "Case Status" and "Documents" sections.

The second mistake is to limit yourself to viewing only the home page and case status.

Rule #2 - you should check the notices in the "Documents" section.

To find this section on your computer or smartphone, refer to the attached screenshots.

The "Documents" section will list and make available for download all of the documents you provided when you submitted your application.

This is also the section where you can supplement the case and upload additional evidence.

Also, in the same section, at the very top, will be new notices from USCIS:
  • I-797c Notice of Action. Notice Type: Acknowledgment of Receipt - Acceptance notice with a date from which the 150 days (date of receipt) begins to run.
  • I-797c Appointment for Biometric Center (ASC) Visit.
  • Appointment for Interview.

Confirmation of receipt comes within 72 hours of submitting the application. Sometimes even within 5 minutes.

The appointment for the biometric center visit may or may not come the next day. The situation differs in every state and city, so you should keep checking.

What should you do if you missed the biometric appointment?

No matter which way you applied or which form you used, missing the biometric procedure is an extremely important issue but is not fatal.

1. Try to reschedule your visit as soon as possible. To do so, contact the USCIS Contact Center at +1-800-375-5283, via live chat, or submit a request through your personal account. It will depend on the employee you talk to. He or she will either agree to reassign right away or tell you to just wait.

2. Wait for the appointment of the next biometric procedure and do not miss it already.

Why is this important?

Missing a biometric procedure can lead to the suspension of your work permit.

Therefore, it is very important not to miss the opportunity and, if you miss it, to reassign as soon as possible.
